Jambu Air Java

Saw these trees with Jambu Air Java at Malay Garden (Gardens by the Bay).
Take some photos of the flower buds, flowers and fruits.
Used to see these in the market in the 1960s.
Had not seen these in the market now. Those in the market are huge and different type.

The Ai Yu Jelly fig (Creeping fig)

The creeping fig can be found on some pedestrian bridges in Singapore. The seeds are used to make Ai Yu jelly (Oh Gio in Hokkien and Wan Tao Long in Cantonese).

Ai Yu jelly is usually eaten with sugar syrup, lime juice and shaved ice in Singapore.

The almost ripe figs are cut into halves and dried in the sun to dry. When it is dried the seeds are scraped from the thick shell and packed into bag for selling.

Below are picture of the creeping fig plant and fruits.

SImpoh Air Leaves (Tauhu Leaves) and it uses

Simpoh Air ("Tauhu Leaf ") and its uses

I found this Tempeh wrapped in paper and tauhu leaf in the market. Nowadays, some tempeh maker packs the tempeh in plastic bag.

The Tempeh - unwrapped to show the tauhu leaf.  Note the leaf pattern left on the
       tempeh.

The tempeh maker wraps 2 pieces of tempeh in one leaf. This saves cost.

Close-up of "tauhu leaf "

The tempeh packed in plastic bag.

When I was young, housewives would normally buy the tauhu after almost buying everything they need because the tauhu would be placed on a "tauhu leaf " (shown below, re-enactment ) and handed over to the buyer. The tauhu will then be placed in the basket on top of other items.

Nowadays, the soft tauhu is put into a plastic bag, then put into another plastic carrier bag when you buy it  from the vendor.
